Guards ! Guards !
Soon on streets of Kalisz, you may see unusual guards. Men from Kalisz Brotherhood of Knights (which reconstructs historical events and fights in our city) dressed as guardsmen from XIII century will be new attraction in our city.
Six knights from Brotherhood already completed whole outfit. Main part of it was a solid caftan – which protected from hits, durable cap and helmet. Every guard had steel sword, spear and wooden club for self defense, and sometimes to deal with hot tempered citizens. On their shield is painted oldest known Kalisz city seal – city trumpeter.
In XIII century guardsmen kept town safe and often had to fight with goons. Their main task was to close gates at dusk, protect city goods and alarm in case of fire. They were walking down the streets yelling to let townsfolk know that they are on duty.
Nowadays they will be an interesting part of main city events and tourist attraction.
