70th anniversary of World War II beginning
Exactly 70 years ago World War II started with the German invasion of Poland. 1st of September at 4:42 Germans attacked Wieluń City, destroying almost 75% of city.
Within less than a month Poland was overwhelmed by the Nazi blitzkrieg from the west, and an attack from the east by forces from the Soviet Union, which had signed a pact with Hitler’s Germany.
War lasted for more than five years and took more than 50 million lives as the German war machine rolled over Europe.
At the Westerplatte peninsula — most known polish resistance point, anniversary will be celebrated by polish government, and politicians from other countries involved in conflict.
In Kalisz, celebration will start today at 17:00 on main city square. Our city government will officially lay flowers under World War II memorial. Special exhibition, considering Kalisz garrison at 1919-1939, will also be opened, and free to see at main city square.
Main events will start 4 days later at 5th September from 10:00. Firstly we will see some reconstruction shows at city streets. At 12:00 on main city square will be official appeal, and after it – at 13:00 you can see military show at nearby saint Stanislaw square.
All those events will cause temporary problems with communication in our city so remember to watch out at 5th September:
- From 9:00 till 11:00 Kamienny Bridge, and forwarding Śródmiejska street will be out of traffic.
- From 8:00 till 15:00 you wont be able to drive through Kazimierzowska street on part between Sukiennicza street to Śródmiejska Street. Also, on that part of street from 6:00 till 15:00 cars wont be allowed to park, including taxis.
- From 6:00 to 14:00 Franciszkańska street (on part between Śródmiejska street and Saint Stanislaw Street) and Saint Stanislaw Street will be out of traffic.
- Also on Rzeźnicza Street, and on all parking at Saint Stanislaw square you wont be able to park from 6:00 to 14:00.
